Origins

Birth of the Concept

As part of the European Union Project, in 2016 KHOJ Manthan Education Programme Society (MEPS) met with multiple museums from around the world, one of which was the ZOOM Kinder Museum in Vienna, Austria.

Manthan Educational Programme Society was inspired by the dynamic, ever evolving nature of the Austrian museum, and believed that Gujarat would benefit from such a museum.

KHOJ is built on a simple belief: a museum for children should keep changing, and every child should be free to touch, try and question.

That belief shaped the whole approach — exhibits that invite participation rather than passive viewing, and content that is refreshed as new exhibition cycles open.

KHOJ Museum grew out of a simple belief: that children learn best when they are given space to question, touch, experiment and build ideas with their own hands. Conceived as a joint initiative with the Manthan Education Programme Society in Ahmedabad, the museum's early inspiration came from meeting a dynamic, ever-evolving children's museum in Europe, whose approach to discovery through play suggested a new kind of institution for Gujarat. Rather than presenting finished answers, KHOJ was designed around inquiry — exhibits that respond to curiosity, invite participation and encourage visitors to explore themes of science, art and everyday life. The philosophy rests on connecting concepts through play, so that learning feels natural, playful and filled with the kind of wonder that keeps a child's curiosity alive long after the visit ends.

Philosophy

Science, Art & Innovation

The museum connects three fields through hands-on inquiry, so children meet ideas by doing, noticing and wondering.

Science

Exhibits such as Bulbule (bubbles), Khagol (astronomy) and Moving Images open up hands-on ways to test ideas about the natural world.

Art

Creative activity is treated as a way of thinking, with spaces for drawing, painting, sculpting and making.

Innovation

Content is designed to evolve, so each visit can bring new questions and new ways of solving them.
